A Quiet Hurricane Era May Be In Progress

***Atlantic Tropical Outlook****

On this Wednesday afternoon, Dolly has dissipated over Mexico and the lats advisory for her has been written. There are no other areas of the Atlantic that are being watched for tropical cyclone activity at this time. Around the weekend, a tropical wave will emerge from the African Coast and conditions appear to be favorable for some development. Right now, that is the only game in town.

According to experts, it appears that the extreme hurricane cycle that began in 1995 appears to be over. The period from 1959 through 2014 yielded 17 seasons that had only 3 named storms before the start of September. The last time we had a season this light was in 1994. That is almost 20 years ago.As you know, hurricane seasons appear to go in cycles. You have quiet periods and then you have busy periods. Right now we seem to be getting into that quiet mode. How many years this could last is anybody s guess but for now, a hurricane cycle like we are seeing is welcome news to everybody along the East Coast and the Gulf.

With all that said, a quiet cycle does not mean we cannot get hit by a tropical cyclone. Even during a quiet year a storm can sneak through the cracks while we are not looking and create havoc. It is still best to be prepared and ready in case a storm threatens your region.

Many folks often say “Florida is noted for their hurricanes.”. That is not always the case. In fact, since 2005, Florida has not seen a hit from a major storm. If the current quiet trend continues, the hurricane free seasons may continue to add up.

Be Ready And Stay Safe everybody!
