Hurricane Sandy Slams Into The East Coast

Hurricane Sandy, now post-tropical storm Sandy, has slammed into the East Coast of the US. The Water rise at Battery Park in New York is a staggering 14.8 feet. Water is rushing into subway stations and the reports that Wall Street trading floor was flooded we found was not true. The Daily News is also under water. There are also reports of water getting into the Brooklyn Battery  Tunnel.

Sandy is still going strong with sustained winds of 85 MPH. The storm surge flooding is at historic heights. This will never be seen again in our lifetimes. New Yorks La Guardia Airport is also under water. There are reports of 4 feet of water in the  tunnels.

Along the Jersey Shore, things are as bad as they can get. Atlantic City is under water. Parts of the boardwalk have been washed away and flooding is severe. Earlier today during the first high tide, I was able to have access to a scanner feed and people who refused to evacuate were trapped in their homes with flood waters rising.

New Jersey took a direct hit from Sandy and I am sure we will not know the extent of damage. As of  this  hour, the water levels are still rising in Atlantic City.

There are reports of 8 feet of water in the Hoboken waterfront.

Just because Sandy is inland does not mean she is done. Winds and rain will still be evident as the system moves inland and weakens.

Tomorrow we will see Sandy in new light as all the damage is assessed.

I think one of the things that strikes me the most is that part of the historic Atlantic City Boardwalk has been washed away. I have not heard any reports about the Casinos yet. I can remember walking down the Atlantic City boardwalk many times in my lifetime and it saddens me to see such destruction. Being born and raised in New Jersey, the shore was one of my favorite places to visit. The rides, the food and just plain fun.

I have heard new reports of 4 feet of water in some of the city subway  tunnels.

I hope everybody is safe. Listen to your local authorities and do not go out until the danger has passed.
