April 2014 Was Wetter and Warmer Then Normal in East Central Florida

The weather in East Central Florida was wetter and warmer then normal along the Treasure Coast during the month of April. Although there were a few cold fronts that passed through the region, they ushered in only very brief periods of cooler weather. Although the fronts were not frequent, they pulled in some periods of heavy rainfall that made it seem more like a summertime weather pattern then an April weather pattern.

The last few days of the month had sea breeze generated showers and thunderstorms which is something you normally only find in the summer. Conditions such as this led to above normal temperatures and rainfall for the month.

The temperatures in East Central Florida were above normal for the region thanks to a southeast to southerly flow of air that was mainly due to Atlantic High Pressure. In addition, there was less pronounced cooling from the cold fronts as they passed through the region.

Since April is normally one of the driest months of the year in our region, it was extremely unusual to have rainfall records set in April.

Daytona Beach-On April 29, a record rainfall event of 2.06 inches beat the record of 1.03 inches set in 2013.

Orlando-A record rainfall event occurred where the area got 1.38 inches of rain beating the record of 1.20 set way back in 1902!

Melbourne-On April 18, Melbourne received 1.23 inches of rainfall which broke the 1943 record of 0.96 inches. All in all, Melbourne received 3.57 inches for the month which was 1.44 inches above normal.

Fort Pierce had a slightly different story as most of the rainfall remained in the northern areas of the Treasure Coast. Ft. Pierce received 2.43 inches while the 30 year normal is 2.66 inches so we were slightly below normal in our area.

What will May bring? That is still a mystery for the crystal ball but typically by around the third week of May the heavens open up as the summer rainy season begins. Remember, it is only about 3 weeks till the start of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season and the Pacific season starts in about a week. Be ready, be safe and don’t be sorry!
