The 2004 Hurricane Nightmare Began 13 Years Ago Today

Good morning Treasure Coast!! 12 years ago today, the hurricane nightmare of 2004 began. First we had Hurricane Charley that came ashore the West Coast of Florida. That storm lasted from August 9-15. Then came Hurricane Frances that was born August 23 and lasted through September 6. Frances was not particularly strong but the system hovered over the Treasure Coast for hours pounding the area with sustained winds and flooding rain. Ivan was the next system to hit Florida and that system hit the Panhandle area with flooding rains and strong winds. Last but least is the infamous Hurricane Jeanne. Jeanne came ashore at almost the exact same place as Frances after doing a complete loop in the Atlantic. Jeanne lasted from September 13 through the 27th. Jeanne reinforced an already damaged Florida with even more damage. Because of these back to back hurricanes, most Treasure Coast homes now have newer roofs.

Hurricane Charley Remembered

Eleven years ago today, our day started out as a normal day at our Stuart K Mart. Although we were all aware of a distant hurricane that was forecast to brush by Tampa in about a week, nobody gave it much thought. This thinking was especially true not only for us but for the folks along the west Coast of Florida and especially for people who lived inland from Arcadia to Orlando. All the forecasts were calling for Tampa to be the most likely target. I should note that most of West Coast Florida was in the cone but in 2004,but nobody paid much attention to the cone of error. Most of the forecasts were based on the exact track. That all changed after Charley! In fact, the NHC has seriously considered taking away the track and only issuing the cone to force people to rethink how they track hurricanes. That neverĀ happenedĀ but forecasters now make it a point to remind people in the cone to be prepared.Untitled20150813124047

Remembering Hurricane Charley 2004

Ten years ago today, Hurricane Charley hit the West Coast of Florida and began one of the worst hurricane seasons Florida has ever experienced. It was one of the most destructive years for the state because almost every square inch of Florida received hurricane force winds that year. When Charley struck, it was a Friday the 13th.
