Mid Atlantic Readies For Major Winter Storm

Winter storm watches and warnings are in place for much of the Eastern US tonight as a major winter storm promises to create havoc. This system could be extremely disruptive for both commuters and travelers  Flights are already cancelled going into Atlanta, which is a major hub for travelers.

The system will be bringing a combination of ingredients including ice and sleet in the south to heavy wet snow in the north east.

There are a lot of different possibilities that could have a dramatic effect on both how severe the storm is and how much snow any one location will get. A difference of as little as 50 miles east or west could have a huge impact. Either way, it looks huge a huge event for almost everybody.

A state of emergency has already been issued in areas like Georgia and South Carolina. In fact, teams from our local Florida Power and Light are already on their way for staging in anticipation of large scale power outages.

Hurricane Hunter planes are scheduled to fly a path around the Gulf of Mexico tonight to measure conditions in the atmosphere in order to gain better confidence with the forecast. this information will be added to the future model runs in hopes of getting a better understanding of the system.

The snow will typically be a wet heavy snow that can be more destructive then the dry snow we saw in earlier storms. The weight of the snow can collapse buildings and cause major problems with the power grid.

If you live along the East Coast US from Georgia north to New England, be sure to be prepared in case the worst case scenario arises. From pictures I have seen on Facebook, it looks like folks are taking the threat seriously by stripping the shelves of many grocery stores.
