The Deep South Tries To Recover After Rare Winter Storm

A rare winter storm has left the deep all but paralyzed. Snow, freezing rain and sleet have made many roads slick and in some cases almost impossible to navigate. As many as 50 million Americans have been affected by this freak winter storm.

In the cities of Atlanta and Birmingham traffic is still at a gridlock with some folks still trapped in their cars since yesterday. Many just abandoned their cars and headed to shelters.

What might seem like a normal dusting of snow for the north east has turned into chaos for states that do not normally get this type of weather. Many of the southern cities do not have the equipment needed to effectively salt and plow the roads after a rare storm event such as this.

If you live in any of the affected states, the best advice is to stay home and do not travel unless it is an emergency. Most schools and businesses will be closed anyway so there is no real need to be on the road.

Most of these southern cities are more used to preparing for hurricanes, not winter storms. It is an eerie sight when you see a picture with snow on the palm trees. The good news is that a warm up will be coming later this week that will melt all the frozen precipitation away.

A look at the radar map shows storm report after storm report of snow and ice in the Carolinas.

In contrast, South Florida will only see a cool down to about 60 with some rain showers today. By Friday, temperatures will return to a toasty 80 degrees.
