Major Winter Storm To Hit Mid Atlantic Region

It looks like the Winter Storm that all the models have been hyping the last couple of weeks is going to be a reality. This storm will affect a large swath of the Mid Atlantic in a full range of Winter Weather. Freezing rain will be an issue in North Carolina near the coast while farther inland, Winter Weather advisories will be in place. Along the Jersey Shore, a coastal flood watch has been issued for the possibility of major coastal flooding, especially from Atlantic County south.

Of all the areas that are going to be hit, probably some of the worst of the storm will be in the Washington DC region and surrounding areas. A Blizzard Watch is in place for this region.  Snow accumulations of 18 to 24 inches are possible in this area.  Temperatures in the area will be in the upper 20’s during the course of the storm. Farther to the south near Wilmington SC, a freezing rain advisory is in place. About 1/10 of an inch accumulation is possible. Patches of ice will make driving dangerous. This advisory is in effect from midnight tonight till 11 AM on Friday. As go farther inland, a Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for central North Carolina. Freezing rain, sleet and snow are possible. This advisory is in place from midnight tonight till 6 PM Saturday. 1 to 4 inches of snow along with ice accumulations of a quarter to half inch are possible. Moving up the coast to New Jersey, a Winter Storm watch is in place from Friday night into Sunday. Heavy snow of 6 to 14 inches are possible. Some sleet could mix in at times. Gusts to 55 MPH are possible near the coast. In addition to the snow, a coastal flood watch has been issued for coastal areas of south Jersey. Widespread moderate coastal flooding is possible. The strong onshore winds will cause the coastal flooding concerns for both south Jersey and Delaware. The counties of Ocean, SE Burlington, Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland could be affected. If you live in the affected regions be sure to get your emergency kit in place and be ready for power outages and staying at home for an extended period.
