An area of low pressure over the central portion of the nation will move eastward through Saturday. A second low pressure system is forming off the South Carolina coast and will move slowly north into the Delmarva Peninsula on Saturday before heading offshore. The combination of all of these low pressure systems will bring rain to the area beginning on Friday. Rainfall amounts through this evening will average from around one quarter of an inch in the far northern areas to around an inch in the Delmarva Peninsula. The rain will become even heavier later Friday night into Saturday as the second low approaches the region. Widespread rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are anticipated with this storm. Local amounts up to 5 inches are possible... especially in those locations that receive the heaviest rain. Given this amount of rain...small streams and possibly main Stem rivers will reach flood stage. Smaller streams will respond first to the rainfall followed by the larger rivers. Flooding could begin as soon as late Friday night along fast responding creeks... while the larger... slower responding rivers... could see flooding persist into early next week. These rainfall amounts also have the potential to cause flooding of roadways...underpasses and poor drainage areas. If you are traveling... please allow extra time to reach your destination. In addition to any flooding... heavy rain can cause reduced visibilities. Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite media outlet for further updates and any possible warnings. People who live near rivers or streams that are prone to flooding should be on heightened alert and should be prepared to take action if flooding develops. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop. Warning Description: Wind Advisory Warning Date: 2:35 am EST on March 12, 2010 WarningSum:...Wind Advisory In Effect From 1 Am To 7 Pm Est Saturday... Warning Message:The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Wind Advisory...which is in effect from 1 am to 7 PM EST Saturday. A low pressure system forming off the South Carolina coast will intensify as it slowly drifts north tonight into Saturday. Meanwhile a high pressure system will build into the Canadian Maritimes. Both will combine to increase the east to northeast winds across the region late tonight into early Saturday evening. Peak wind gusts should average around 50 mph. The combination of the strong winds and heavy rain will make it easier for weak trees, tree limbs and wires to be knocked down. Power outages should occur. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Wind Advisory means that winds of around 45 mph PR greater are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution on bridges and overpasses. Where possible do not park vehicles under trees and please secure any outdoor items.
